Microneedling & Dermaplaning Aftercare: What to Expect & How to Care for Your Skin
Microneedling & Dermaplaning Aftercare: What to Expect & How to Care for Your Skin
Microneedling and dermaplaning are popular skin treatments designed to leave the complexion looking smoother, brighter and more refreshed.
While the treatments work differently, good aftercare is essential for both. Your skin may be temporarily more sensitive following treatment, so how you care for it during the first few days can make a noticeable difference to your comfort, recovery and overall results.
At Divat Aesthetics, we recommend following the guidance below after your appointment.
Microneedling Aftercare
Microneedling creates controlled microchannels within the skin to stimulate the body’s natural repair process and support collagen and elastin production.
What is normal after microneedling?
Immediately after treatment, your skin may appear:
- Red or flushed
- Warm or slightly sensitive
- Mildly swollen
- Tight or dry
- Similar in appearance to mild sunburn
These effects usually begin to settle within the first 24–72 hours.
Some clients may also notice mild dryness, flaking or roughness as the skin renews itself.
The First 24 Hours After Microneedling
Keep your skincare routine as simple as possible.
Avoid touching your face unnecessarily and always wash your hands before applying any skincare products.
For the first 24 hours, avoid:
- Makeup
- Retinol or retinoids
- AHAs and BHAs
- Glycolic, salicylic or other exfoliating acids
- Physical scrubs
- Strong vitamin C products
- Perfumed or heavily fragranced skincare
- Self-tan
- Swimming
- Saunas and steam rooms
- Hot baths or very hot showers
- Strenuous exercise that causes excessive sweating
Your practitioner may recommend specific gentle products depending on your skin and the treatment performed.
Skincare After Microneedling
During the first few days, focus on hydration and protecting your skin barrier.
Use a gentle cleanser and a simple, soothing moisturiser.
Do not exfoliate peeling or dry skin manually. Allow it to shed naturally.
Once sensitivity and redness have completely settled, you can gradually return to your normal skincare routine.
Active products should be reintroduced slowly rather than all at once.
Sun Protection After Microneedling
Sun protection is particularly important following microneedling.
Your skin can temporarily be more sensitive to UV exposure, so use a broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 every day.
Avoid prolonged direct sunlight and sunbeds while the skin is healing.
Consistent SPF use will also help protect your results and reduce the risk of unwanted pigmentation.
When Can I Wear Makeup After Microneedling?
We recommend avoiding makeup for at least the first 24 hours following treatment.
Where possible, allowing your skin additional time without makeup can be beneficial.
When you begin wearing makeup again, make sure your brushes, sponges and applicators are clean.
Dermaplaning Aftercare
Dermaplaning gently removes dead surface skin cells and fine vellus hair using a sterile professional blade.
Immediately afterwards, the skin often feels extremely smooth and may look noticeably brighter.
Because the uppermost layer of dead skin has been removed, your skin may also be slightly more sensitive than usual.
What is normal after dermaplaning?
You may experience:
- Mild redness
- Temporary sensitivity
- Slight tightness
- Increased sensitivity to skincare products
- A smoother and brighter appearance
Minor redness generally settles relatively quickly.
The First 24–48 Hours After Dermaplaning
Treat your skin gently and avoid unnecessarily touching or rubbing your face.
For approximately 24–48 hours, avoid:
- Retinol
- Exfoliating acids
- Facial scrubs
- Strong active skincare
- Waxing or other facial hair-removal treatments
- Saunas and steam rooms
- Very hot showers
- Swimming
- Heavy sweating where possible
- Sunbeds
- Direct prolonged sun exposure
Use gentle, hydrating skincare while your skin settles.
Can I Wear Makeup After Dermaplaning?
Although makeup can usually be applied after dermaplaning, we recommend allowing your skin some time to breathe following treatment where possible.
If you do apply makeup, make sure your products and brushes are clean to minimise irritation.
Will My Facial Hair Grow Back Thicker?
No.
Dermaplaning does not change the thickness, colour or growth pattern of your facial hair.
The hair is removed at the surface of the skin and will naturally grow back in the same way it did before treatment.
It may initially feel slightly different as it begins to grow through because the hair has been cut straight across, but dermaplaning does not cause thicker or darker facial hair.
How Long Do Results Last?
Microneedling
Microneedling results develop gradually as the skin’s natural renewal and collagen-production processes take place.
A course of treatments may be recommended depending on your skin concerns and treatment goals.
Dermaplaning
The immediately smoother appearance following dermaplaning can typically be enjoyed for several weeks as your natural skin-cell cycle continues.
Regular treatments can form part of an ongoing professional skincare routine.
Can Microneedling and Dermaplaning Be Combined?
In some cases, treatments may be combined or incorporated into a wider facial treatment plan.
However, suitability will depend on your skin, sensitivity, current skincare products and individual treatment goals.
Your practitioner will advise you on the most appropriate treatment plan.
When Should I Contact Divat Aesthetics?
Mild redness, sensitivity and dryness can be expected after these treatments.
However, contact Divat Aesthetics if you experience symptoms that concern you, particularly if they are becoming progressively worse rather than improving.
Seek urgent medical attention for any severe or rapidly worsening reaction.
