Lip Filler Aftercare: What to Expect After Your Appointment

Lip filler is one of our most popular treatments at Divat Aesthetics, whether you are looking for subtle definition, improved symmetry, added volume or a fuller lip shape.

Good aftercare is an important part of the treatment process. Following the correct advice can help support healing, reduce unnecessary irritation and allow your filler time to settle properly.

Below is our general guide to lip filler aftercare, including what is normal, what to avoid and when you should contact your practitioner.

What happens after lip filler?

Most lip fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally occurs within the body and helps attract and retain moisture.

Immediately after treatment, your lips may look fuller than expected because of swelling. They may also feel slightly firm or tender.

Your filler will gradually settle and soften over the following weeks. We usually recommend assessing your final result at around 2–4 weeks after treatment, once the majority of swelling has settled.

Temporary asymmetry during the healing period can also occur because one side may swell more than the other.

The first 24 hours after lip filler

During the first day, your lips are particularly sensitive following the injections.

We recommend:

  • Avoid touching, pressing or massaging your lips unless specifically advised by your practitioner.
  • Avoid applying makeup directly over the injection sites immediately after treatment.
  • Keep the area clean and avoid unnecessary contact.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for the remainder of the day.
  • Avoid alcohol shortly after treatment as it may contribute to bruising or swelling.
  • Avoid excessive heat, including saunas, steam rooms and hot yoga.
  • Avoid extreme cold directly against the treated area.
  • A clean, cool compress may be used gently if you are experiencing swelling.
  • Use clean hands when applying any lip products.

Do not aggressively massage or manipulate the lips in an attempt to reduce lumps or unevenness unless your practitioner has told you to do so.

Lip filler aftercare during the first week

Your lips will continue settling during the days following your appointment.

Try to:

Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water supports normal skin hydration and recovery.

Avoid excessive pressure on the lips. Be gentle while the filler is settling.

Avoid smoking and vaping where possible. Apart from the repeated pressure placed on the lips, these may also irritate the recently treated area.

Protect your lips from excessive sun exposure. Once the injection sites have healed, consider using a suitable lip SPF when outdoors.

Keep your lips moisturised. Use a clean, gentle lip balm or a lip-care product recommended by your practitioner.

We also advise avoiding unnecessary facial, dental or laser treatments around the area while your lips are healing. If you have an upcoming dental procedure or another aesthetic treatment, speak to your practitioner about the appropriate timing.

Is swelling normal after lip filler?

Yes. Swelling is one of the most common effects following lip filler.

You may experience:

  • Swelling or puffiness
  • Tenderness
  • Mild redness
  • Small bruises around injection points
  • Temporary firmness
  • Small areas that feel slightly uneven
  • One side appearing more swollen than the other

These effects generally improve gradually.

It is important not to judge the final shape of your lips immediately after your appointment.

Your lips can change considerably as swelling subsides and the filler integrates with the surrounding tissue.

How long does lip filler take to settle?

Although everyone heals differently, most clients find that their lips begin to look and feel more settled over 1–2 weeks.

We generally recommend allowing around 2–4 weeks before judging the final result.

During this period, the filler often feels softer and the shape becomes more natural as swelling resolves.

When should I contact Divat Aesthetics?

Most swelling, bruising and tenderness after lip filler are expected.

However, certain symptoms require urgent attention.

Contact Divat Aesthetics immediately if you develop symptoms including:

  • Severe or increasing pain
  • Skin becoming unusually pale, white or grey
  • Mottled or unusual skin discolouration
  • Severe or rapidly worsening swelling
  • Significant heat or redness around the treated area
  • Pus or other signs of infection
  • Fever or feeling significantly unwell
  • Changes to your vision

Some complications associated with dermal fillers can require urgent treatment, so please do not wait for a routine follow-up appointment if you are concerned.

For serious or rapidly developing symptoms, seek urgent medical attention.

How long does lip filler last?

Lip filler longevity varies from person to person.

Many hyaluronic acid lip fillers may last approximately 6–12 months, although this is not guaranteed.

How long your results last can depend on factors such as:

  • Your metabolism
  • The product used
  • The amount of filler injected
  • Your natural lip anatomy
  • Lifestyle
  • Previous treatments
  • How your body responds to the filler

Some clients choose occasional maintenance treatments once the filler gradually begins to reduce.

Can I have a lip filler top-up?

This depends on your result, the amount originally injected and how your lips have healed.

We do not recommend deciding that you need additional filler immediately after treatment because swelling can temporarily make the lips appear uneven or can hide the final result.

Allow your lips to settle first and discuss any additional treatment with your practitioner.
